The Pabellón Cultural Is Back on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, One Room at a Time

The Pabellón Cultural de la República "Nabor García Aguirre" closed in 2022 when granite panels started falling off its façade. It has reopened through a side door. Free films now run on Friday evenings in its cinema room, and the open-air theater is hosting events again. The 660-seat main theater, which was the reason the building went up on Paseo de la Marina, is still a construction site under the municipality's Public Works department. This fall the Pabellón is a small-room venue inside a large building, and the theater is planned to be the last space to reopen.

What Closed the Building in 2022

The Pabellón sits at Boulevard Paseo de la Marina, Lote 8, in Cabo San Lucas Centro. When it was inaugurated, Peninsular Digital reported that its main entrance faced the marina basin. It opened on March 31, 2011. Architect Juan Pablo Serrano designed it, and the complex had a 660-seat main theater, smaller halls and exhibition space. Mexico's national Sistema de Información Cultural lists the Los Cabos International Film Festival among its past uses, including the edition held November 10 to 19, 2016.

The closure came from the outside of the building. According to Peninsular Digital, Protección Civil reported in 2022 that the exterior granite tiles, some weighing as much as 150 kilos, were a danger to people walking past. Leaks and structural damage added to the problem, and the building was shut. Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes (ICA) director Tanya Covarrubias told El Sudcaliforniano that the falling granite, which covers the entire building, was one of the main concerns. The same article noted that Los Cabos has only two cultural venues of major importance, and that both were closed for a long time.

From the 2022 closure to the first events this October, the town went about four years without its main stage. The way the building is reopening follows from how it failed. Covarrubias described specialized machinery, the façade and the granite as the hard parts of the job, and those all belong to the large spaces.

Which Spaces Are Open This Fall

The ICA took over operation of the Pabellón from the Delegación de Cabo San Lucas and set its own rehabilitation plan. It received a budget for priority repairs starting in 2025. The reopening is happening in stages, and as of mid-October 2026 each space is at a different point.

Space Status as of October 2026 What runs there
"Ismael Rodríguez" cinema room Open Cinema Pabellón, Fridays at 7 p.m., with the Cineteca Nacional
Open-air theater Open Has already hosted events since the reopening
Main theater, 660 seats Under the Dirección de Obras Públicas Nothing scheduled; full reopening targeted for next year

The official reopening was the Festival Agua Blanca Arte para Todos 2026. The Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos announced it on October 5, with performances by Mathias González Hernández, Tomás Vázquez Hernández, Mario Castro Ruán and the Cuarteto Convergencia from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música. Local performers were directed by maestro Rodolfo Henkel. Covarrubias described the goal of the staged plan to El Sudcaliforniano:

"We are going to open little by little, above all so that the community, the public, the people of Los Cabos can take this space back as their own, and so that it becomes a meeting point through art."

Friday Nights in the Ismael Rodríguez Room

For now, Cinema Pabellón is how most people will use the building. The ICA calls it a new, permanent film program created through a partnership with the Cineteca Nacional, Mexico's national film archive. The first listed screening was Nudo Mixteco on Friday, October 16, at 7 p.m. It is a fiction feature directed by Ángeles Cruz of Oaxaca, rated B for viewers 12 and up, and admission was free.

Two different start dates were announced, which caused some confusion. The municipal release said Cinema Pabellón would begin October 10. October 10 was a Saturday, and the ICA's own recap describes that night as a separate program called Sal y Arena. It paired a graphic exhibition with a screening of the documentary "De Sal y Arena: el futuro de las tortugas marinas en manos del ser humano" by Miguel SR, presented with the sea turtle conservation group Asupmatoma. The Friday series itself started on the 16th.

The ICA has not yet published titles for the coming Fridays, October 23 and October 30. Weekly listings go up on the Pabellón's official Facebook page and its Instagram account. The ICA's event pages on Cultura Los Cabos list the time, rating and admission for each screening, so they are the place to check on a Friday afternoon whether a film suits the whole family.

The Money Behind the Last Room

The main theater is likely to be the last space back because it needs the most work, and the estimate for that work has grown. In September 2023, Tribuna de México reported a planned rehabilitation investment of just over 4 million pesos, aimed mainly at structural damage and leaks. In November 2025, the same outlet reported that a technical assessment by architects put full rehabilitation at more than 30 million pesos. The two figures cover different scopes of work. The first was planned for structural damage and leaks, and the second estimates what it would cost to restore the whole building.

Work inside the main theater was already underway that November. The Ayuntamiento reported that damaged drywall in the theater had been replaced as one phase of the project. Peninsular Digital described the full plan as façade repair, new lighting and sound systems, and upgrades to the technical areas and public access. The cinema room opened this October, and the theater moved to the Public Works department, with a full reopening targeted for next year and no specific date announced.

November Along Paseo de la Marina

The Pabellón's November calendar so far has one confirmed date, and it falls in the same week as the year's largest event downtown.

  1. Tuesday, November 10. Downtown businesses, coordinated by Carlos Tinoco's Asociación de Empresarios de Los Cabos with SCORE International, are holding a Baja 1000 Block Party with a display of Trophy Trucks in the Centro tourist zone, according to El Sudcaliforniano. No street or hours have been published yet. The race itself, held November 9 to 15, starts and finishes in San José del Cabo, as SCORE International announced and El Sudcaliforniano's route report confirmed. That makes the block party the race-week event closest to the marina.
  2. Saturday, November 14. For Día de la Californidad, the Pabellón will host a photography exhibition by Josafat de la Toba.
  3. Every Friday. Cinema Pabellón at 7 p.m., with titles posted week by week on the Pabellón's social channels.

The Pabellón has not yet published plans for Día de Muertos, the holidays or workshops between now and December. When the ICA adds events, they will be announced on the same Facebook and Instagram pages. The next confirmed date after the photography exhibition will probably be a Friday screening in the Ismael Rodríguez room, since that is the space with a standing weekly slot.
